    What we’re learning about the FlyDubai co-pilot who allegedly stabbed the captain and tried to crash the plane

    Investigators are working to piece together the motives behind a terrifying mid air struggle on a FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv that nearly ended in disaster. The chaos erupted as the aircraft approached Israel when a co pilot allegedly stabbed the captain and attempted to steer the plane into a crash. While the captain fought back long enough to unlock the cockpit door, it took the combined effort of passengers and crew to overpower the assailant. Two off duty pilots who happened to be on board eventually stepped in to stabilize the aircraft, making an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Of the 174 people on board, no passengers were seriously hurt, though several crew members required hospitalization.

    While the suspect has not been publicly named, an Omani official confirmed he is an Omani citizen. Questions regarding why he attacked his colleague have led to conflicting theories among world leaders. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initially suggested the event mirrored a suicide attempt, noting reports that the co pilot begged others to kill him after being subdued. However, Netanyahu later stated that personal information uncovered during interrogations suggests the man underwent Islamist radical indoctrination. This sentiment was echoed by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, who explicitly labeled the incident a jihadist terror attack and described the co pilot as a terrorist.

    The geopolitical tension surrounding the event grew as U.S. President Donald Trump suggested potential links between the attacker and Iran, claiming that current intelligence points toward Iranian involvement. Prime Minister Netanyahu remained more cautious on that specific point, stating it was still too early to definitively link Tehran to the plot. Meanwhile, Israeli security officials continue to investigate whether this was a lone wolf action or part of a coordinated September 11 style operation designed to cause mass casualties amidst existing regional conflicts involving Hamas and Hezbollah.

    Following his initial detention in Saudi Arabia, where he was questioned by local authorities, the co pilot has since been transferred to the United Arab Emirates for further investigation. This move follows direct coordination between UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Prime Minister Netanyahu. As Israeli authorities prepare to join those interrogations, they hope to uncover exactly how a trained commercial pilot reached such a violent breaking point and whether any larger network provided support for the attempted crash.
