Houthi advance boosts Iran’s leverage over the US and Saudi Arabia – but may cost rebel group its legitimacy back in Yemen

In a swift series of maneuvers beginning in early September 2026, Houthi forces seized a massive stretch of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline, claiming critical territories including the port of Mokha and the strategic island of Mayyun. This aggressive expansion represents the most significant shift in the front lines since the 2022 truce, effectively granting the rebels control over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. While the humanitarian toll has been severe, with over 100,000 civilians fleeing toward Djibouti, the geopolitical implications are far reaching. For Iran, this victory provides a mirror image of its influence over the Strait of Hormuz, giving Tehran a secondary maritime choke point to exert pressure on global shipping and U.S. interests during a period of heightened regional tension.

Beyond the alliance with Iran, the Houthis appear to be playing a calculated game with Saudi Arabia. After years of stalemate and failed negotiations regarding sanctions and political recognition, the rebels have leveraged a fractured opposition in southern Yemen to make their move. By seizing these vital waterways, they aren’t just seeking economic gain through potential transit fees; they are attempting to force Riyadh back to the bargaining table from a position of absolute strength. The goal is likely no longer just an end to blockades, but full political legitimacy as a governing power within Yemen.

However, this military triumph carries a profound internal risk for the Houthi movement. Throughout their history, they have struggled to balance raw military power with genuine domestic popularity across Yemen’s diverse landscape. History shows that no single entity has successfully maintained both total military command and broad political acceptance throughout the entire country in modern times. By prioritizing territorial conquest and acting as a strategic tool for regional powers, the Houthis may find that while they can capture every port and shoreline by force, they are further alienating the population they hope to eventually lead legitimately.
