Warren Buffett found the most boring way to bet on AI

Warren Buffett has built a legendary career by ignoring the noise of Wall Street and investing in the unglamorous machinery of the real economy. While many investors spent the last few years chasing volatile tech stocks and gambling on which startup would dominate the generative AI race, the 96 year old billionaire remained true to his philosophy of buying things he actually understands. By sticking to railroads, insurance, and public utilities, Buffett managed to position himself for massive gains from the artificial intelligence revolution without ever having to pick a specific software winner.

The secret to Berkshire Hathaway’s accidental success lies in the sheer amount of electricity required to keep AI running. Data centers are notoriously power hungry, turning basic utility companies into essential pillars of the digital age. Decades ago, Buffett acquired MidAmerican Energy and other utilities like NV Energy, moves that had absolutely nothing to do with computer science at the time. Now, these assets are seeing unprecedented demand as states like Iowa and Nevada become hubs for massive server farms. According to current CEO Greg Abel, data centers already account for about eight percent of Berkshire’s energy load in Iowa alone.

This pattern extends beyond just flipping switches. Through a previous acquisition of Precision Castparts, Berkshire owns a critical piece of the supply chain for gas turbines used in electrical generators. Although Buffett once admitted he paid too much for the company after taking a multi billion dollar write down, those same turbines have now become one of the primary bottlenecks for expanding data center capacity. This puts Berkshire in a unique sweet spot where their industrial holdings are suddenly indispensable to the highest tech firms in the world.

Ultimately, this approach highlights why Buffett is often called the oracle of Omaha. Rather than trying to predict which AI application will change society, he focused on owning the infrastructure that allows any version of AI to exist regardless of who wins the market share battle. As analysts note, it is classic Buffett logic to invest in businesses that the economy simply cannot function without. In an era defined by hype and rapid disruption, it turns out that being boring is often the most profitable strategy available.
